Wayne A. Standifer, DVM (retired April 2019)

Dr. Wayne Standifer is a 1982 graduate of the Auburn School of Veterinary Medicine where his father, the late, Dr. William Standifer also graduated in 1951 and founded Standifer's Animal Clinic in 1957. Dr. Standifer and his wife Carol live in Birmingham.  “I have few memories not associated in someway to veterinary medicine and pets. Like many of our clients - I have shared my life with my pets. I feel honored to serve my community as a veterinarian, share in the lives of so many, and linked to the tradition of service that is Standifer's Animal Clinic.”


Rhesa Houston, DVM, Managing Veterinarian

Dr. Rhesa Houston has a special interest in public health with a specific focus on the health and wellness benefits of the human-animal bond which led her to create Assistance Animal Consulting. Devoted to young people, Rhesa spends much of her time motivating young audiences through her educational workshops in veterinary medicine; physiological, psychological and emotional health and wellness in relation to the human-animal bond; team building and leadership development in sports and athletics; and youth education and leadership development.

Rhesa earned a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Tuskegee University and her
Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Piedmont College. She lives in Birmingham with her three adopted children, Roxie, Chihuahua mix; Aila, domestic shorthair cat; and Tootsie domestic shorthair cat.


Laura Alverson, DVM

Dr. Laura Alverson joined Standifer's Animal Clinic in 2018 after working as an emergency veterinarian at an emergency veterinary hospital in Birmingham. She graduated from Birmingham-Southern College and received her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Tuskegee University College of Veterinary Medicine. Her special interests are in emergency veterinary medicine and pet surgery.

Originally from Pell City, Dr. Alverson lives in Birmingham with her family and pets of 5 teenagers, 5 cats and 5 dogs. Outside of the veterinary hospital, she enjoys to read, travel and be active in Bluff Park United Methodist Church.

Hugh Washington, DVM

Dr. Hugh Washington is a native of Decatur and graduated from Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine before moving to Birmingham. He worked as a relief veterinarian in Birmingham and Homewood before joining Standifer's Animal Clinic in 2017.  Dr. Washington and his wife Patti enjoy BBQ, working in their garden and spending time with their Australian Shepherd, Kylie.
